Just because our parents are getting older doesn’t mean they have to give up their independence. Many older adults in Panama live alone, maintain active lifestyles, and enjoy their autonomy. However, over time, small everyday situations may arise where having an extra pair of hands can make a big difference.
How do you know when it might be time to offer a little more support? Here are some signs worth paying attention to.
1. Everyday Errands Are Becoming More Difficult
Going to the bank, shopping, taking care of paperwork, or running an errand may require more time and effort than before.
This doesn’t necessarily mean your family member has lost their independence. They may simply need a little help with certain everyday activities.
2. They Avoid Appointments Because They Don’t Want to Go Alone
A doctor’s appointment, medical test, or even a simple errand can feel easier when someone is there to accompany them.
If your mom or dad starts postponing activities because they don’t have someone to go with them, it may be time to consider companionship support.
3. They Have Difficulty With Their Phone or Technology
📱 A password, a new app, a video call, or completing something online can quickly become frustrating.
A little help with technology can allow them to continue doing many things on their own.
4. They Call You Frequently to Solve Small Problems
“How do I pay this?”
“Can you help me with my phone?”
“I need to buy something.”
“Who can I call to fix this?”
Individually, these may seem like small situations. But when they start happening frequently, they may indicate that your family member could benefit from having a reliable and trusted support network nearby.
5. They Go Out Less Than They Used To
Sometimes it’s not because they don’t want to go out. They may feel uncomfortable getting around alone, running certain errands, or dealing with situations that once seemed simple.
A little companionship can help them maintain their routine, independence, and active lifestyle.
6. You Are Becoming More Concerned
This sign matters too.
Your mom or dad may be doing perfectly well, but perhaps you work all day, travel frequently, or live far away and constantly find yourself thinking:
“What happens if they need something and I can’t be there?”
Having someone trustworthy nearby can also provide peace of mind for the whole family.
7. They Want to Remain Independent but Are Open to Help With Specific Things
This may be the most important sign of all.
Accepting support does not mean losing independence. In fact, having help with certain activities can allow an older adult to continue living independently with greater confidence and peace of mind.
Helping Without Taking Away Their Independence
Talking about these issues with our parents requires respect. Instead of approaching the conversation as “You can’t do this on your own anymore,” try asking:
“What are some things you’d like a little help with?”
The difference may seem small, but it can completely change the conversation.
At Venga Mijo, we believe that providing support also means respecting each person’s independence. That’s why we offer assistance with everyday needs where a trusted helping hand can make a meaningful difference.
